The Nature
The Romsdal mountains around Åndalsnes have some of the most exciting hiking areas in Norway. The area extends from the shore by the Romsdals fjord to the highest mountains in the northwestern. Here you find Northern Europe's highest mountain walls, flat mountain plateaus, lush woods and salmon rivers.
Trollstigen and Trollveggen are classic landmarks that a lot of people visit on their journey through the Romsdalen Valley. In recent years, the trip across Romsdalseggen has become very popular. Romsdalseggen offers views of the wildest mountains in Norway. On your way over the ridge they appear one by one: the King, the Queen, Romsdalshorn, Great Trolltind, Great Venjestind, and not the least Trollveggen with its ‘tooth garden’ of jagged troll peaks. As wallpaper in the background you get a glimpse of Trollstigen, Molde and the Norwegian Sea. The annual Mountain festival is also a unique opportunity to join the hiking tours in the area - with or without a guide.
The contrasts between fjord and mountains are stunning. A hike may very well start at sea and end up in the mountains – and it doesn’t have to take many hours. Many of the sites have a strong characteristic of wilderness despite that they are easily accessible. One can easily go for a walk at the highest peaks and still be back for dinner. Canoeing on the beautiful river Rauma that meander through the Romsdalen valley and SUP-paddling on the river Istra are also popular activities.
The Rauma railway from Dombås to Åndalsnes is in itself a spectacular outdoor experience, and an excellent gateway to the area. Otherwise it is easy to get here from east via E136 through Romsdalen. The nearest airport is Årø in Molde, located just one hour from Åndalsnes. From Vigra in Ålesund there are about two hours’ drive.
